Year 2 unit 58 Sound in interactive media

We did the foley technique by trying to replicated the sound from the ghost busters clips, it was quite a success but some of the sound was still missing.

Making a looping song in Logic Pro

I used recored sound that I have been collecting to create some kind of song. I have chose to only use my voice when it came to sound design. I think this work was quite a success and I would do this again if i had the chance

Creating sound in Audacity

I have used blank toneless sounds to create a range of different sounds. I started to make them by just looking at the waves them selfs and make a patten out of them but when i got a bit more use to how it all works I made my own sounds by listing to the sound itself and changing it around to make the sound I wanted.

The Assignment Brief: 2D/3D Sound Toy

This SoundToy is called RainDrop Melody Maker. This is a SoundToy because it asks the user to click on the drops to create a sound from the drop and with every few seconds it plays again until it been clicked again to stop the drop. This was made using HTML. The SoundToy was made with its own sound. The idea that I get from this is to keep my ideas simple and make sure the sound is at top quality.

This SoundToy is called Coactive. This is a SoundToy because it asks the user to press parts of a song to create an interesting rhythm, the sounds can be click on and off whenever. This was made using HTML. The SoundToy was made with its own parts of music. The idea that I get from this is to stick to normal sounds and stay away from music as it can be too hard to keep in beat of this SoundToy.
This SoundToy is called Rain Noise. This is a SoundToy because it lets you change the volume of each pitched white noise to create a unique sound with them. This was made using HTML. The SoundToy was made using recorded white noises. The idea that I get from this is the use of sliders can help me give more options in my SoundToy.
This SoundToy is called TypeDrummer. This is a SoundToy because when you type in a letter or word, it makes a repeating drum beat to the letters that you have typed in. This was made using HTML. The drum beats was recored for this SoundToy. The idea that I get from this is to record a lot of sounds to give me a range to pick from.

This SoundToy is called Pet-00. This is a SoundToy because you create the level for the items to clash together and create sound from that. This was made using HTML. The sounds was made using computer software. The idea that I get from this SoundToy is to try and let the user has as much freedom as i can.

Ideas Generation

For my first idea I have decided to try and recreate one of my older ideas to fit this assignment brief, this idea is about the use of RGB and creating difference sounds by clicking one of the letters or clicking two out of three of the letters to create a blend of the two letters. I was thinking of trying to get the camera to move in unity when one of them is clicked and a sound plays when clicked.

For my second idea you can select up to three colours and each colour has a sound that has the same pitch as the colour's number when you pick a colour in photoshop. You can pick all three of them and then there will be three sounds playing at the same time or you can mute two of them and only play one colour's sound.

For my third idea you click on plain white circles to make them do sound and fill with colour, these sounds will be of the right tone for the size of the circle itself for example the bigger circles will make a deeper sound while the smaller ones do a lighter sound.

Project Proposal

BTEC Interactive Design

Section 1

Working title: Sounds in Colours

Target Market: people who are not very interested in games but like playing around with interactive art pieces. They are the kinds of people who love visiting Interactive Art exhibitions.

What you will work towards producing: What I want out of this is a 2D sound toy by giving colours its own sound.

Section 2

Influences, starting points and contextual references: RainDrop Melody Maker, Coactive, Rain Noise, TypeDrummer, Pet-00.

Early ideas research and sources:  (What are your sources for contextual and personal research?) soundtoy.net, unity tutorials,

Section 3

Intended techniques, non digitial and digital processes: unity, coding, sound editing,

Timescales: (Please insert weekly targets of what you intend to work on from the beginning to the end of the project)

       Research

       More Research and start proposal

Write more of proposal and ideas generations

      Finish proposal and Ideas development

      Produce outcome

      Produce outcome 2

      Final evaluation

Section 4

Proposed methods of evaluation: (How will you evaluate your project?)

Regularly update blog to show how it going along, showing other students my project thus far and get comments about it, using the end show to get final comments about my work.

Ideas Development

Im going to start developing my ideas by using tutorials to help guide me in the right way.

After a very long time of understanding a bit more of the code, I have made three shapes that you click on them to make a sound, but each one reacts in a difference way when you click on them.

The left pill shape rotates when the mouse is over the object and does not change colour, the middle orb always changes colours no matter which one of the three objects you click on and the right object does not rotate or change colour when clicked but it always changes from green to blue to green again.

added a background to make the sound toy a bit more interesting. I thought a nice space background would be both pleasing to the eye and interesting within my sound toy as well.

Added a new object to give more options within my sound toy.

This object (at top) is a textured pyramid that flips 180 degrees when the mouse moves AWAY from the object.

Comments of possible target audience

L) Minecraft and furby boom

that looks good whats that?

5 mins play time

what are you meant to do?

*repeat three or four times*

M: what are you meant to do in this game?

I don’t know

B) watch youtube clips of marble run

can i have a go? x2

a digger to grab things? a dumper truck

i only like the blue, black and white, i don’t like the pink

Final Comments

L: simple, effective and fits the criteria but it might need more things to press.

S: Why was there a space background? Me: I wanted to have a background that was nice to look at but did not take away from the sound toy itself. S: Ah ok, it is limited but simple and functioning and I do like it.

F: I do like how simple and easy it is to understand this and I really like the sounds you put in but I think it needs more. Me: Can you say what it is that I might need? F: maybe another button to press or more sounds, I don't know.

So in conclusion, after testing out the sound-toy it turns out that people like the simple and functioning way it works, but it is limited and will not give play time for more then 5 minutes. To improve this work, I need to give the sound-toy more buttons and sounds to keep some more interest in the toy itself.
